September 6 is World Packaging Day, a new initiative launched by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) in 2026.
Founded in 1968, WPO is an international non-profit organisation bringing together packaging organisations and professionals from around the world. It is also behind the WorldStar Global Packaging Awards, one of the industry's established international packaging awards.
As its first year, World Packaging Day is still a relatively new industry observance, and celebrations remain limited in scale. But its message is worth considering. WPO has chosen four themes for the day: Packaging for Progress, Packaging Against Food Waste, Packaging and Economic Growth, and Packaging and Sustainability.
This broader view is important. Packaging is often discussed mainly in terms of waste and environmental impact. These concerns matter, but packaging also protects products, extends shelf life, supports transportation and storage, and helps prevent food waste.
Sustainability should not simply mean using less packaging. It should mean finding better ways to protect products while using resources responsibly. The environmental impact of packaging needs to be considered together with the impact of damaged or wasted products.
Flexible pouches are one example. Depending on the product and application, a pouch can provide effective protection while remaining lightweight and convenient for storage, transportation and everyday use.
As a pouch manufacturer, we believe packaging should serve a practical purpose first, while continuously improving how that purpose is achieved.
Sustainability is not about going backwards. It is about finding better ways to move forward.
