India’s food labeling debate took an important step forward on August 28, when the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) proposed a new front-of-pack warning label system for packaged foods.
Under the proposal submitted to the Supreme Court of India, certain packaged foods would carry prominent red hexagonal warnings on the front of the package, including warnings such as “HIGH FAT,” “HIGH SUGAR” and “HIGH SALT.” The proposed system is intended to help consumers identify products with high levels of these nutrients more easily.
India has a large and rapidly growing packaged food market, covering snacks, biscuits, confectionery, ready-to-eat foods and many other everyday products.
For consumers, particularly children and teenagers, food packaging can have a strong influence on purchasing decisions. Bright colors, attractive graphics and product images can make processed foods appealing, while detailed nutritional information printed on the back of a package may be easy to overlook.
A clear warning on the front could make it easier for consumers and parents to recognize products containing high levels of sugar, salt or fat before making a purchase.
If the proposed labeling system is implemented, Indian food brands may need to reconsider their food packaging design. Warning information would need to be visible without overwhelming the brand's existing visual identity.
For the flexible packaging industry, this could also mean more packaging artwork updates. Snacks, confectionery, spices and other food products commonly use pouches with large printable surfaces, making printed packaging an important part of how brands communicate with consumers.
For emerging Indian food brands, flexible production options such as digital printing and small MOQ packaging could make it easier to update designs, launch new products and test different packaging concepts.
The proposal is still subject to the regulatory process, and the final requirements have yet to be confirmed. However, the latest development shows that food labeling, consumer awareness and packaging design are becoming increasingly important in India’s growing packaged food market.
